Discussion workshop: Amniotic membrane application in primary care
In this discussion workshop, delegates will get an introduction to the use of amniotic membrane transplantation in the treatment of patients with ocular surface damage. This human tissue is collected from the placental tissues of pregnant women following elective caesarean section and is preserved, ready to be used as a biological bandage on the surface of the eye. This session welcomes all attendees interested in learning more about this innovative treatment option as it will explore the background, production, application process and clinical benefits for using amniotic membrane in primary care.
Learning outcome(s):
Practitioners will be able to assist patients with ocular surface damage in exercising their rights and making informed decisions about their care (s.1)
Practitioners will be able to obtain valid, informed and voluntarily provided consent from patients when considering the use of amniotic membranes in their care (s.3)
Practitioners will explore the latest clinical research and developments in the use of amniotic membranes in conjunction with contact lens application, for the management of ocular surface damage, and consider the application in primary eyecare practice, relative to their scope of practice (s.5)
Practitioners will develop an understanding of the appropriate use of amniotic membranes for the treatment of ocular surface damage in primary eye care practice, considering the requirements of clinical justification for each individual patient, relative to their scope of practice (s.7).
